Range Update
June 2025
In our June Update, ABS introduces a Brake Caliper for the Citroën C3, C4, DS3, Opel Corsa, Opel Mokka, and Peugeot 208 and 2008.
What’s special here is that the piston is slightly off-center. This has been done to prevent noise. To reduce this noise, manufacturers often use a trailing piston offset instead of a leading one. A leading offset can cause more noise, while a trailing or zero offset tends to be more stable and quieter. This is because the position of the braking force can make the caliper vibrate if it shifts between the front and back of the mounting point, which can lead to noise.
Explanation
Manufacturers try to stop squeaky brakes by putting the brake piston slightly behind the brake pad, the so called trailing offset. In a leading offset, the piston is positioned slightly ahead of the brake pad contact point on the rotor. This makes the brake more stable and helps stop shaking that can cause noise. This can cause the caliper to rotate slightly, potentially leading to vibrations and noise.
There are things you can do to prevent noise:
– The brake pads must fit well and move easily.
– The parts are kept clean, greased, and free from rust or dirt.
– Old or damaged pads and discs are replaced.
